Compare Conference Call Services - Glossary

What exactly is a conference call? A conference call is a telephone call in which a person may need to hold a conversation with more than one person. With a regular phone conversation there are two parties on the line. In some instances, the two parties on the line may need to add more people to the conversation. This is done with a conference call. In the professional world conference calls is something that is done on a regular basis between multiple parties. There might be a situation that needs to be handle and the best and cheapest way to do this is to have a conference call. This will allow all the parties to be able to effectively communicate with each other at the same time with the same conversation. Some conference calls are just to be heard, while others are made for the participation of all the parties. Conference calls that are made for listening are called Audio Teleconference.

Here are some examples of conference call terms and definitions:

  • ATC This is Audio TeleConference.

  • Conference calls are not only used in the professional business world. A conference call can be used from the privacy of your own home. Although it is not always called a conference call, when used from your home people refer to it as 3 way calling. 3 way calling is very much the same as conference calls because there are more than 2 parties on the line. 3 way calling is used when the first party calls the second party, and then the 2 decided to add an additional person to the line. The first or second party then uses the flash button located on their phone and they will get a dial tone. Once they hear the dial tone they begin to dial the number of the third party. When the third party answers the phone they then use the flash button again and that will link all 3 parties to the same line and they begin the conference call or 3 way call.

In the business world a conference call is used in meetings, classes or presentations. Conference calls are used a lot because all the parties might not be able to attend these meetings all the time. With international companies this would be the way to communicate with other offices instead of having to travel out of the country to attend meetings and presentations. Not only is conference calling helping to cut out expenses, it is also a way to ensure workers to be more useful with the company because they are able to still be in the office. This is important because it is less money that the company would have to spend on traveling for the employees. This is also a way for the businesses to be able to have meetings with the clients. Being able to communicate with the clients with conference calls is always important not only to the client but to the company as well. Really, things happen and everyone is not always available for these meetings or there may be other circumstances that prevent the presence of one or more parties. In this event, it is still important for all parties to be available even if it is with conference calls. This was a brilliant idea and it has saved a lot of companies time and money.
